Triangle Passing with Rotation

This triangle passing drill teaches youth players the single most important habit in soccer: move after you pass. Players pass around a triangle and immediately follow their pass, learning angles and support positioning.

Equipment

  • 9 cones
  • 2 to 4 balls

Setup

Set up triangles with cones 12 yards apart, 2 to 4 players per triangle side. One ball per triangle starts at any cone.

How it works

  1. Player A passes to Player B at the next cone, then runs to the back of Player B's line.
  2. Player B receives across their body on the half-turn and passes to Player C, following the pass.
  3. Continue the rotation. After 3 minutes, reverse direction so players receive on the other foot.
  4. Finish with a competition: first triangle to 30 clean passes wins.

Coaching points

  • Receive with the back foot so your hips open to the next pass.
  • Pass and move. Standing still after a pass is the habit this drill exists to break.
  • Weight of pass matters: firm enough to beat a defender, soft enough to control.

Progression

Add a passive defender inside the triangle, then make the defender live once players handle the pressure.
