Passing Squares
Passing Squares is one of the best passing drills for 8-year-olds because it maximizes touches. Pairs pass across a small cone square, earning a point every time the ball travels through without touching a cone. High reps, zero standing in line.

Focus
First touch
Equipment
- 8 cones
- 1 ball per pair
Setup
Build 10x10 yard squares with cones, one square per pair of players. Partners stand on opposite sides of their square with one ball.
How it works
- Players pass the ball through the square to their partner, earning 1 point per clean pass through the middle.
- The receiving player must control the ball with two touches maximum before returning it.
- Play 2-minute rounds. The pair with the most points wins the round.
- Rotate partners each round so players adapt to different passing speeds.
Coaching points
- Lock the ankle and strike with the inside of the foot.
- First touch should set up the next pass, not stop the ball dead.
- Call your partner's name before passing to build communication habits.
Progression
Shrink the square to 6x6 yards, or require one-touch passing for players who master two touches.
