4v1 Rondo
The rondo is the foundation of possession soccer, used from Barcelona's academy to Sunday youth practice. Four players keep the ball from one defender in a small square, developing one and two-touch passing and instant decisions.
Ages
U10 to adult
Players
5 to 10 (groups of 5)
Time
15 minutes
Focus
Quick passing
Equipment
- 4 cones per group
- 1 ball per group
Setup
8x8 yard square per group. Four passers take a side each; one defender starts in the middle.
How it works
- Passers keep the ball moving; the defender presses to win it.
- If the defender touches the ball, the passer who lost it becomes the new defender.
- Count consecutive passes out loud as a group.
- Celebrate a nutmeg of the defender as 5 bonus passes.
Coaching points
- Move along your line to create passing angles. A flat square dies fast.
- Two touches maximum: one to receive across your body, one to pass.
- Disguise your passes. Look one way, play the other.
Progression
Advance to 4v2 with two defenders working together, or restrict everyone to one touch.
