1v1 Shielding Battles

Shielding wins more youth soccer duels than any skill move. In this 1v1 drill, one player protects the ball inside a small grid while the defender tries to win it, teaching kids to use their body legally and keep possession under pressure.

Focus
Ball shielding

Equipment

  • Cones for small grids
  • 1 ball per pair

Setup

Make 8x8 yard grids, one per pair. One attacker with a ball, one defender per grid.

How it works

  1. The attacker shields the ball for 30 seconds while the defender tries to poke it away.
  2. Attacker earns a point for surviving the 30 seconds; defender earns a point for winning the ball.
  3. Switch roles. Best of 6 rounds.
  4. Rotate pairs every 2 rounds so players face different body types.

Coaching points

  • Keep the ball on the foot farthest from the defender at all times.
  • Arm bar for feel, not a push: elbows bent, hand feeling where the defender moves.
  • Stay side-on. Facing the defender square makes the ball easy to steal.

Progression

Add a small goal the attacker can turn and score in, so shielding becomes the setup for an escape move.
