1. Get moving · 8 minutes
Mark a 20-yard channel. Put players in two loose lines with room between them.
- Jog down and back, then add high knees, hip rotations and side shuffles.
- Use controlled lunges and straight-leg movements, focusing on balance.
- Finish with three progressive runs. Increase effort gradually, then take a short water break.
Coach’s cue: Good movement before fast movement. Give players room to work at their own pace.
2. Feel the pressure · 10 minutes
Create paired 8 × 8-yard grids and give each pair a ball.
- Alternate attacker and defender every 30 seconds.
- Take short breaks to show a balanced, side-on position.
- Change partners and repeat without pushing or grabbing.
Coach’s cue: Stay balanced so you can respond to the next movement.
3. Close down, then contain · 15 minutes
Each pair uses a channel with a gate at either end.
- The defender passes to the attacker, then closes the space.
- Swap roles after every repetition and keep each contest short.
- After several repetitions, widen the channel if the defender is consistently successful.
Coach’s cue: Approach fast. Arrive slow. Wait for the heavy touch.
4. Defend the next action · 18 minutes
Set up two-goal 3v3 games. Rotate teams through 3-minute rounds.
- Ask the nearest player to delay an attack while teammates recover.
- Pause once to show how the other two players protect the open goal.
- Finish with a free game and notice the response after possession changes.
Coach’s cue: The first defender buys time for the team.
5. Reset and reflect · 4 minutes
Bring the group to the side of the field with their water bottles.
- Walk together and let everyone catch their breath.
- Ask the group: What helped you defend without diving in?
- Name one thing the team did well and one thing to carry into the next session. Collect the equipment together.
Coach’s cue: Let players answer first. Keep the final message short and useful.
Keep the whole team in the loop.
Put practice on the calendar and check attendance before you set up.
