1. Get moving · 10 minutes

Mark a 20-yard channel. Put players in two loose lines with room between them.

  1. Jog down and back, then add high knees, hip rotations and side shuffles.
  2. Use controlled lunges and straight-leg movements, focusing on balance.
  3. Finish with three progressive runs. Increase effort gradually, then take a short water break.

Coach’s cue: Good movement before fast movement. Give players room to work at their own pace.

2. Read the pressure · 12 minutes

Use groups of five with an active defender. Keep spare players rotating quickly.

  1. Play three 3-minute rounds with brief resets.
  2. Ask support players to adjust before the pass is made.
  3. Make the area smaller only if ball control stays reliable.

Coach’s cue: Move the defender before you play through the space.

3. Control the duel · 12 minutes

Build parallel channels and rotate attacker and defender after each repetition.

  1. Start every repetition with the defender’s pass.
  2. Ask the defender to delay and steer the attacker away from the gate.
  3. Keep contests brief, with recovery time while another pair works.

Coach’s cue: Choose the moment to challenge rather than chasing the ball.

4. Solve pressure as a unit · 16 minutes

Use the goalkeeper-plus-three game against three opponents, scaling the area for the older group.

  1. Play four short rounds, changing roles and allowing a quick reset.
  2. Encourage players to use both gates instead of repeating one passing pattern.
  3. Let the defenders counter toward the main goal after a turnover.

Coach’s cue: Support the first pass, then prepare the second.

5. Compete and adapt · 16 minutes

Set up multiple small games or rotate teams through 3-minute rounds.

  1. Play with two goals at each end to encourage switches of attack.
  2. Use quick restarts and rotate tired players out.
  3. Let the last game run without coach interruptions, then discuss the decisions.

Coach’s cue: When possession changes, your next action matters.

6. Reset and reflect · 4 minutes

Bring the group to the side of the field with their water bottles.

  1. Walk together and let everyone catch their breath.
  2. Ask the group: Which decision helped the whole team, not only the player on the ball?
  3. Name one thing the team did well and one thing to carry into the next session. Collect the equipment together.

Coach’s cue: Let players answer first. Keep the final message short and useful.

Keep the whole team in the loop.

Put practice on the calendar and check attendance before you set up.
