1. Get moving · 8 minutes

Mark a 20-yard channel. Put players in two loose lines with room between them.

  1. Jog down and back, then add high knees, hip rotations and side shuffles.
  2. Use controlled lunges and straight-leg movements, focusing on balance.
  3. Finish with three progressive runs. Increase effort gradually, then take a short water break.

Coach’s cue: Good movement before fast movement. Give players room to work at their own pace.

2. Receive into your next action · 10 minutes

Use small triangle stations to give everyone repeated touches.

  1. Start with controlled passes and an open-body first touch.
  2. Change direction halfway through.
  3. Ask players to receive into space rather than stop the ball underneath them.

Coach’s cue: Put the ball where your next action needs it.

3. Shoot before the defender arrives · 18 minutes

Set attackers near the top of the area, defenders behind at an angle, and a goalkeeper in goal.

  1. The coach serves into the attacker’s path and releases the defender at the same moment.
  2. The attacker controls and finishes, then swaps lines with the defender.
  3. Run three 4-minute blocks with water, goalkeeper rotation and feedback between them.

Coach’s cue: A useful first touch makes the early shot possible.

4. Find the shooting moment · 15 minutes

Play short 3v3 games with quick restarts and plenty of spare balls.

  1. Encourage an early finish when the path to a goal is clear.
  2. Reward the support pass that creates the chance as well as the finish.
  3. Keep the final round free and let players choose the right moment.

Coach’s cue: Look for the chance before you take an extra touch.

5. Reset and reflect · 4 minutes

Bring the group to the side of the field with their water bottles.

  1. Walk together and let everyone catch their breath.
  2. Ask the group: Which first touch gave you time to finish?
  3. Name one thing the team did well and one thing to carry into the next session. Collect the equipment together.

Coach’s cue: Let players answer first. Keep the final message short and useful.

Keep the whole team in the loop.

Put practice on the calendar and check attendance before you set up.
