1. Get moving · 10 minutes

Mark a 20-yard channel. Put players in two loose lines with room between them.

  1. Jog down and back, then add high knees, hip rotations and side shuffles.
  2. Use controlled lunges and straight-leg movements, focusing on balance.
  3. Finish with three progressive runs. Increase effort gradually, then take a short water break.

Coach’s cue: Good movement before fast movement. Give players room to work at their own pace.

2. Set the receiving angle · 10 minutes

Create triangles alongside the main area with one ball per station.

  1. Work in both directions, following each pass.
  2. Receive across the body and keep the ball moving with two touches.
  3. Use the final repetitions to increase pass speed without losing control.

Coach’s cue: Receive so the next pass is available immediately.

3. Time the delivery and the run · 20 minutes

Place wide players in channels and two lines of attackers outside the area.

  1. Begin with low deliveries and one near-post and one far-post runner.
  2. Alternate wings and rotate positions after six crosses.
  3. Add recovering defenders only when the timing is consistent. Keep service suitable for the group.

Coach’s cue: Arrive as the ball arrives. Avoid waiting in the scoring space.

4. Finish with a recovering defender · 20 minutes

Move into the finishing pattern with a defender releasing on the coach’s serve.

  1. Play four 4-minute blocks, rotating goalkeepers and resting between blocks.
  2. Vary the pass while keeping the attacker’s route and defender’s release clear.
  3. Ask attackers to choose placement or power based on the space available.

Coach’s cue: Be decisive once the ball is in shooting range.

5. Reset and reflect · 5 minutes

Bring the group to the side of the field with their water bottles.

  1. Walk together and let everyone catch their breath.
  2. Ask the group: What made the cross and the run work together?
  3. Name one thing the team did well and one thing to carry into the next session. Collect the equipment together.

Coach’s cue: Let players answer first. Keep the final message short and useful.

Keep the whole team in the loop.

Put practice on the calendar and check attendance before you set up.
